The Palastbündnis was founded in the year 2005 in Berlin under pressure of the approaching demolition of the Palast der Republik. The goal to all this was to preserve the historical substance of the building in the center of the city. The first meetings were organized by the "Palastretter", a group of young architects aiming a refreshment in the public discussion about the preservation of the Palast. The strategy was to pool the resources of a variety of personalities from cultural life and politics. The Alliance for the Palast embraced more than 350 supporters and active members throughout Berlin, Germany and the rest of the world.

The Palastbündnis was based on the successfully initiated temporary cultural use of the Palast der Republik by "Zwischenpalastnutzung e.V." (since 2003) where initatives and institutions like Volkspalast with Sophiensaele, HAU & Shrinking Cities, Berlin-Alexanderplatz with Volksbühne, Fraktale, et al, played a vital part.

The projects was committed to the doubt that a overhasty and argueable decision about the deconstruction of the Palast der Republik was made to dispel a possible debate about the future of the historical center of Berlin. The Palastbündnis pled for the saviour of this fully intact public building. It represented a new generation of dialogue liberated from the ideological conflict "Palast vs. Castle". The goal was to focus on realistic solutions in line and respect with the historical development.

The Palastbündnis operated independently from political parties or any governmental or institutional promotion. Any contribution was voluntary, the campagne and the staff was entirely financed by donations of numerous groups and individuals that were driven by the hope to prevent the Palast from being demolished.
