Germans have a history – a history of genocide and terror founded in the believe to be people of supremacy. This is my history and I cannot hide from it, particularly abroad. Despite the laugh around – don’t mention the war! – these conversations painfully remind me to the darkest parts of my national identity. There is no escape, it is what it is.

Germans is a worst case scenario, the ultimate dept. It is the shadow that will always follow me. Maybe this piece is a means to say sorry, or it is grief. Maybe it is a protest, or rebellion. Maybe a bit of them all.
