Palast der Republik

The Palast der Republik has from the day it opened in 1972 until its demolition in 2006 been a controversial building in the city center of Berlin. Situated on the “Museumsinsel” in the historical neighbourhood of the Berlin Dome and several museums of global reputation, the building was an object from a time and period considered “terminated” by the reunification of the two Germanys in 1990. Politics decided to eradicate (all) physical evidence of this era of German history. It was a people’s house as much as ist was the seat of the parliament of the GDR. A architect vision and manifestation of the socialist idea. Though the political practice didn’t live up the the expectations and promises, the building was a symbol, also for the divided country. In the late 1990s it was discovered asbestos in the building structures which led to the process of discrediting the building and what it stands for.

At the time I was part of a collective of artists and activists trying to preserve the Palast der Republik from demolition by campaigning and giving inspiration what instead the building could be used for.
