Paris Reflected 1735 – 2024 V1/10

“Paris Reflected 1735 – 2024” presents a digitally restored version of the iconic Turgot Map of Paris, an exquisite cartographic masterpiece from the 18th century, meticulously crafted between 1735 and 1739 by Louis Bretez. This map offers a panoramic view of Paris, capturing the streets, buildings, and landmarks of Paris with unparalleled detail of the time. The map offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the city’s past. The juxtaposition of rich architectural detail and the absence of life in the streets is as well striking. While the streets remain empty, the Seine River teems with activity, where workers and fishermen going about their daily lives. After a while you get captivated by the intricate network of void lines and shapes. When viewed from a slight distance, they coalesce into a grand, abstract representation of the city about 300 years back in time.

Hand-painted with a light blue hue, the Seine River adds a subtle yet impactful dimension to the map, enhancing its realism while preserving its historical integrity. Framed in dark oak, this artwork is a captivating tribute to the enduring legacy of Parisian architecture and city planning.

Through the process of digital restoring and reimagining the Turgot Map, I not only preserve its historical significance but also pay homage to the vision and technical skill of its creators. My contribution to the beauty of this work is the hand-painted Seine – plain and simple, as well as a colour enhancement of the shield. The colour adds a subtle yet impactful dimension to the map, enhancing its realism while preserving its historical integrity. This technique not only highlights the Seine River but also draws the viewer’s attention to its central role in shaping the cityscape of Paris.

Welcome to the tammorama

For those who don't know me yet :-)

I’m Tammo Rist, an artist whose journey has taken me from the bustling streets of Berlin to the serene landscapes of Oslo. Born in Germany, I found my artistic calling early on, and after completing my education at Universität der Künste Berlin and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, I set my sights on Norway’s capital.

Since 2006, Oslo has been my home, and it’s here that I’ve immersed myself in it’s vibrant art scene, leaving my mark through a diverse range of mediums and techniques. While my roots lie in traditional forms of expression, my practice has evolved over the years to encompass digital media, photography, graphics, light objects, painting, and performance. This diversity reflects my insatiable curiosity and my desire to constantly challenge artistic norms.

At the core of my work is a fascination with deconstructing the image, blurring the lines between different artistic categories to create pieces that defy easy classification. My creations are deeply personal, drawing inspiration from my own experiences and surroundings. Each piece tells a story, capturing moments in time and space that have left a lasting impression on my psyche.

My artistic process is guided by intuition rather than rigid rules or structures. I embrace spontaneity, allowing the eye and the moment to dictate the direction of my work. As a result, many of my pieces arise organically, infused with a sense of raw authenticity that defies perfection.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in numerous national and international exhibitions and projects, garnering acclaim for my innovative approach and thought-provoking concepts. My work challenges viewers to see the world through a different lens, inviting them to explore the complexities of the human experience in all its beauty and imperfection. Join me on this journey of exploration and discovery as we navigate the boundless possibilities of art together.
